An episode during the period of Indian
nationalist agitation against British rule,
forming part of Mahatma Gandhi's campaign of
civil disobedience. On 11 Mar 1930 Gandhi and
his followers set out to walk 241 mi/ 150 km
to Dandi, to campaign against the Salt Tax
imposed by the British government, which
maintained its monopoly by making it illegal
for Indians to make their own salt. After
arriving at Dandi on 6 Apr, Gandhi and his
followers defied the British government by
making their own salt. On 4 May Gandhi
announced that the government-owned Dharasana
saltworks were to be taken over on behalf of
the Indian people. Gandhi was arrested but
his followers advanced on the saltworks as
planned. As the marchers moved forward in
columns they were beaten to the ground,
offering no resistance.
